PROCESS

Process of Making Insulated Glass Units

Insulated glass production involves machines like washing units, spacer conveyors, and pressing units. The process entails bending a hollow aluminum spacer bar to shape, filling it with desiccant, and sealing it with primary sealant (butyl). Two glass panes are then pressed together with the spacer bar, and a secondary sealant (polysulfide or silicone) is applied to complete the unit.

1. Spacer Preparation
  • Hollow aluminum spacer bars are cut to the required length.
  • The spacer bars are bent to the desired shape using a bending machine.
  • The spacer bars are cleaned and prepared for the next step.

2. Desiccant Filling
  • Desiccant material (silica gel or zeolite) is inserted into the spacer bar.
  • The desiccant absorbs moisture from the air trapped between the glass panes, preventing condensation and fogging.

3. Primary Sealing
  • Butyl sealant is applied to the spacer bar's sides and holes.
  • The primary sealant provides an initial seal and helps to bond the spacer bar to the glass panes.

4. Glass Assembly
  • Two glass panes are positioned on either side of the spacer bar.
  • The glass panes are aligned and spaced evenly apart by the spacer bar.

5. Pressing
  • The glass panes are pressed together using an automatic presser.
  • The presser applies even pressure to ensure a tight seal and prevent air leaks.

6. Secondary Sealing
  • Polysulfide or silicone sealant is applied to the unit's sides.
  • The secondary sealant provides an additional layer of protection against moisture and air leaks.
  • The sealant is cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Final Inspection
  • The completed IGU is inspected for quality and airtightness.
  • The unit is checked for any defects, such as sealant imperfections or glass damage.
  • The IGU is then packaged and shipped to customers.

These steps ensure that the insulated glass unit is manufactured to high standards, providing excellent thermal performance, durability, and energy efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Our IGUs are ideal for residential homes, commercial buildings, offices, and industrial facilities. We tailor each unit to meet specific structural, thermal, and aesthetic requirements.

Yes, our IGUs are designed for optimal energy performance.

Yes. We offer tempered and laminated glass options that comply with safety glazing standards, making them suitable for high-impact areas or code-specific installations.

Bear Glass can manufacture IGUs using a variety of glass types, including Clear float glass, Low-E (low emissivity) glass, Tempered safety glass, Laminated glass, Tinted or reflective glass, Patterned or decorative glass. Each choice affects energy efficiency, strength, aesthetics, and privacy.

A warm-edge spacer is a thermally optimized material placed between the glass panes. Unlike traditional aluminum spacers, it reduces heat transfer, prevents condensation, and improves overall energy efficiency. Bear Glass uses high-performance spacer systems for superior durability.

Yes. IGUs significantly reduce external noise. For greater soundproofing, Bear Glass can customize your unit with laminated glass, asymmetrical pane thicknesses, or acoustic interlayers, which are ideal for urban areas, schools, or healthcare facilities.

Yes. IGUs can be specially designed for skylights or sloped glazing with appropriate seals, spacers, and safety glazing (such as tempered or laminated glass) to withstand environmental stress and meet code requirements.
